D&S Builders is converting the nine-story Walnut Building at 706 Walnut Street—built in 1955—into a Holiday Inn Express. The adaptive reuse keeps the mid-century frame while modernizing the exterior and interiors: original red brick stained opaque white, a new horizontal glass storefront, and eight floors of former offices recast as 91 hotel rooms. Work includes MEP and fire-safety retrofits, a second-floor stair egress, and an updated ADA entrance. Ground-floor tenant Yassin’s Falafel House stays open through construction. The project adds downtown hotel rooms by reuse, not replacement—historic character with modern hospitality systems.
